May 31 Roundup

Ted Dean at BDA Limited offers up some very interesting numbers from China at CNET News.com that help put the size of the mobile market in perspective. According to Dean, 200,000 new cell phone accounts are opened daily in China. Also there are "500 million active cell accounts in China, and the number will grow to around 784 million by 2011." BDA predicts that "239 million people will access the Internet by cell phone in 2011."

Dean adds the numbers are based on sim cards, and some people have more than one. For example, "Beijing citizens who visit Shanghai quite a bit, for instance, might have a card for each city to avoid roaming charges. BlackBerry owners often base their accounts in Hong Kong because that's where the service is available."

If accurate, those are monster numbers and the potential easily dwarfs the saturated U.S. market...

May 30 Roundup

Big news today is Palm's new Foleo thingy. I'm no rocket scientist and maybe this is just way too over my puny head, but I just don't understand who and where the market is for this mobile, thin-client, bigger than a device device. Am I the only one too stupid to figure it out? Is this a consumer play or enterprise? Or just something gadget geeks who need the latest thing will buy? As a consumer, do I really need this when I can get a more fully functional MacBook for the heavy stuff to complement my Windows Mobile smartphone for the light email and Internet access?

I'm guessing the enterprise is the target because that's where the money is, but will IT want to support it in lieu of or in addition to the ubiquitous notebooks for the mobile worker? Your guesses are as good as mine because at first glance I just can't see it happening. Then again, what do I know as I work in marketing...

May 29 Roundup

Two interesting mobile storage-related posts from different parts of the equation. Ross Rubin at NPD Group posts from his Out of the Box blog why memory cards are not getting the job done from a sharing mobile content perspective when compared to standalone personal media devices. Over at iSuppli, Frank Dickson discusses the challenges mobile operators face weaning subscribers from sideloading content.

In my opinion, for the time being in the U.S, the PC will be the primary conduit for getting content on and off mobile devices regardless of whether or not the network is high speed and onboard storage is removable (i.e. memory card). Personally, I can't recall the last time my microSD card was removed from my Samsung Blackjack and inserted into a different device. Too much of a hassle in my book.

Quick Look: Sprint Power Vision Phone UpStage by Samsung

I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the Sprint Ambassador Program to try out some of Sprint's latest 3G multimedia phones and services. For Phase III of the program, Sprint sent me the hyped-up, double-sided Sprint Power Vision Phone UpStage by Samsung.

Since I let my 6th grader son test out the Phase II handset, the Sprint Power Vision Phone Fusic by LG, I gave him a crack at the UpStage as well. He's the target audience for a multimedia handset and he needed one anyway for weekday usage. Hey, I'm cheap so why pay when I can use something for free?

The UpStage had mighty big shoes to fill as my son (and his friends) really liked the features and functionality of the Fusic. I must admit it was a pretty competent and nice looking phone.

At first glance, the UpStage does capture your attention due to it's unique double-sided approach to phone capabilities on one side and multimedia, predominantly music, on the other. However in daily practice, the UpStage is kind of a letdown. Here are my son's thoughts on the handset:

The Samsung UpStage definitely lived up to its description of a sleek, new concept for a music phone, but simple functionality was definitely over looked. For example, I don’t want to have to flip my phone over every time I need to type something. Also I experienced some bugs, one being that when listening to music through the headphones, it also plays out of the speaker. Another bug I found is that sometimes the phone jams up when receiving a call, rendering it impossible to answer the call.

The dual screens and touch sensitive scroll wheel were good ideas which I would like to see more of, but only after they have been rethought and done differently. Speaking of the scroll wheel, it did a good job of not imitating the iPod’s and being a fresh new concept all over again. Although, the button placement could be less awkward or less sensitive, I found myself hitting end way too often.

One good thing is the lush, larger screen, which definitely made SprintTV more enjoyable, but did not make the limited games and other content last longer. Finally, I found that the network connection to everything but the music store was unreliable. Once again, I would like to see Samsung come out with another phone that utilizes these technologies, but is directed towards a more diverse audience.

Content: 7
Functionality: 4
Reliability: 5
Looks: 9
Overall: 6.25 - Not bad
I have to concur with many of gadget geek junior's observations as it seems Samsung went for too much "innovation" and "wow factor" while overlooking the critical aspect of usability. It's just not a handset you want to play around with all the time. Case in point, my son took the Fusic everywhere to listen to music, play games, find content, etc. Now with the UpStage, if we go out during the weekends to shop, run errands, eat, etc, my son leaves the handset at home. Nuff said.

And from a carrier perspective that's not a good sign because you can't increase ARPU if the handset is not being used....

May 23 Roundup

This post by Thomas Husson at JupiterResearch about kids born in the mid-to-late 90s being today's "mobile" digital natives and a hot and lucrative mobile consumer market is quite interesting. Not being a Jupiter client, I don't have access to the "European Mobile Youth Consumer Survey 2007" that Husson references and authored. It'd be interesting to see where mobile games fall in terms of content and services that young European customers are more likely to use and buy. Growing up playing GameBoys, DS/DS Lites and PSPs (umm yeah) must significantly impact this market. My soon-to-be 12 year old son play games on his handset, but since he's not paying for the content (it's a carrier review phone) it's kind of a moot point...

May 21 Roundup

This "Switched On" post from Ross Rubin at NPD Group via Engadget about RAZR d'être got me thinking about storage and handsets. I haven't been paying too much attention lately, but in the U.S. is the industry standardizing on adding storage to handsets only via removable solid-state memory cards instead of having more on-board memory or micro hard drives to keep bill of materials costs down? Durability of hard drives in an handset is an issue. But with iPod nanos going up to 8GB right now and rumored to be heading in the 16GB and/or 32GB direction soon, how come on-board handset storage hasn't increased much? If music phones are supposed to replace iPods and other PMPs (not my belief) in the future then will most mobile content be stored via removable memory cards?

Bob Egan at the Tower Group is quoted via IDG News Service about Symantec offering a Norton secruity smartphone suite to help enterprises manage and protect Window Mobile handsets. Will this help advance mobile enterprise efforts or is just another security company attempting to create a need and fear (i.e. mobile anti-virus) where no problem exists today?

AT&T offers mobile backup solution

I've gotten the daily roundup compilation down pat so I'm going to try to re-introduce some commentary back into the blog when time allows. Since I work for a backup company, this The Boy Genius Report about AT&T offering a mobile backup solution got me interested.

I know other carriers offer over the air backup of contact info for consumers, so I was wondering where else mobile backup can work, especially from a power user/business user standpoint.

I sync my Samsung Blackjack Windows Mobile 5 handset with my company's Exchange server for contacts, calendar, and email so for me a mobile backup agent doesn't seem necessary for this type of data.

However, I would like to protect other mobile content and apps, system state info, etc in case of disaster (i.e. break or lose phone). I currently back up this data to my phone's microSD memory card, but if you lose the phone, most likely you lose the backup too.

So is there an OTA backup service for this? Is there even a market? How about for the enterprise?

One problem I can see from a provider standpoint is having to support the varius OS platforms and then specific manufactureres and handsets which makes development a pain.

Any thoughts?
