July 25, 2007 Roundup

Courtesy of Gizmodo comes this post that Helio is providing ActiveSync and Exchange Support for Helio Ocean users for "only" an extra $10 a month. This is on top of the all-you-can-eat data plan that all users receive. Before I lay the smackdown on Helio for trying to gouge customers for every last $ of ARPU, I must note that Verizon (the king of trying to milk as much revenue from each and every customer possible) also charges extra for syncing Exchange email on top of the unlimited data plan. As a consumer, what's the point of an "all-you-can-eat" plan if you need to pay extra to access Exchange? It's not like the carrier has to do anything on the enterprise side to make it happen. Just an another example of how the carriers have us customers "best interests" in mind. Oh yeah....

On the subject of the huge potential of the China mobile market, Thomas Husson at JupiterResearch posts that according to China's Ministry of Information, the country ended June with 501.64 million mobile users. Wowza! Husson makes an interesting point that with so many users, China "has now reached critical mass to impose its own" mobile standards if it wanted to. "I put it to you, Greg," but why shouldn't China throw its weight around to make sure it has a say in the future of mobility?

July 23 Roundup

More on the potential of the China mobile market from a new report by Raymond Yan at In-Stat, which states that smartphones are headed for mass adoption in China.

One of the positives is that currently "more than half of [China] Smartphone owners paid $25 or more every month for wireless services, 30% higher than that of non-Smartphone users."

On the otherhand, a cause for concern among the platform players is that similar to other places in the world, "Most [China] Smartphone users have no idea about the OS of the phone and do not care about it when purchasing Smartphones."

Does this mean that handset brand is clearly more important than the underlying OS?

July 5 Roundup

I recently returned from a 10 day vacation in China and it seems everywhere I looked someone was using their cellphone with text messaging looking likeit was a big part of everyday mobility. My teenaged niece came up to Shanghai from Guangzhou and seemed to be getting messages left and right. I should have asked her to show me how she used her handset as I assume she texts in Chinese characters.

The new mobile subscriber numbers China Mobile is putting up is mind-boggling, and it's hard to fathom that the vast majority of the population are probably still not yet mobile. Given that China has 1.4 billion people, give or take a million or two, it's easy to see why the market potential is enormous.

On the topic of China's potential, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney and Think Equity Partners analyst Jonathan Hoopes comment in E-Commerce Times about Research in Motion getting the green light to sell BlackBerries in China. I wonder how pervasive email usage is?

In addition, Kevin Wang at iSuppli forecasts that China’s mobile navigation market is to grow more than 10-Fold by 2011. Mobile content and in this specific case, GPS location based services, look extremely promising as I'm guessing more people will rely on mobile devices than PCs to get information, such as in Japan.
