Texas Instruments Intros DaVinci Media Platform

CIO Today writes about Texas Instruments' new digital-video hardware platform, called DaVinci. According to the article, "the video platform is based on a configuration of processors, integrated software and development tools specifically designed to support several kinds of advanced video applications," and "help simplify the development and manufacturing of digital-video capabilities on consumer-electronics devices."

Yankee Group analyst Laura DiDio said, "As Texas Instruments currently is the number-three semiconductor producer and supplier of 60 percent of mobile-phone chips, the move into the home-media market was not a surprise. "DaVinci is Texas Instruments trying to keep up with Intel,. This is a move they have to make to thrive." DiDio thought the platform could find use in consumer devices, such as cameras, handhelds and set-top boxes.

Nitin Guptat noted that technologies like DaVinci are just one piece of the puzzle. "It's a matter of the technology middlemen and content owners coming together to bring compelling content to the market," he added.
