3G Wireless Handhelds Extend Productivity

CIO Today writes that "emerging third-generation wireless services are extending the reach of laptops -- and making handheld devices and smartphones a more effective alternative for some uses." Recent announcements such as bundling EV-DO capabilities with laptops expands "the usefulness of laptops on the road while enabling smaller devices to take on more functions."

As mobile data accessibility and speeds improve and converged devices pack more functionality and features, will the handheld ultimately replace the laptop as the mobile worker's main tool of trade? Usage model is important, especially considering the smaller display. Endpoint Technologies analyst Roger Kay thinks PC and laptops will remain king for the timebeing, "You might be able to make do with a small constellation of devices, but that's a future evolution," he said.
