Tablet PCs Fail To Take Hold

Following up on a commnentary on the disappointing tablet PC market by Russell Kay at Endpoint Technology Assocates, NewsFactor Network picks up the story and takes a look at why "tablet PCs have failed to make any kind of significant dent in the corporate or consumer markets." The article cites Kay's forcast that only 4 million tablet PCs will be shipped per year by 2010, which is far below market expectations.

Other analysts concur with Kay's assesment of the tablet PC market, which has failed to demonstrate traction outside of health care and real estate. "Right now, we're mainly seeing it in sectors that have a high degree of mobility, where employees are even more mobile than those who use laptops," said In-Stat/MDR analyst Brian O'Rourke.

"Until we see additional functionality beyond just being able to do pen-driven computing, tablet PCs will be stuck in vertical niches," he added.
