Embedded EV-DO Provides Lowest Mobile TCO

Mobile Pipeline covers a recent study from iGillottResearch that found "embedding 3G EV-DO access provides the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for mobile devices."

The study "modeled use of mobile e-mail for varying numbers of sales personnel, using laptops with an EV-DO card and laptops with EV-DO access embedded." TCO for embedded EV-DO was 14.4 percent lower than using a PC Card that provides EV-DO. The costs for supporting mobile workers accessing mail via a smartphone was "appreciably higher".

Matt Vartabedian at iGillottResearch said, "The cost of supporting a mobile worker with a smartphone is appreciably higher than having the employee use a laptop with the equivalent wireless connection."
