Wireless Goes Boom

Hot on the heels of strong earnings from handset manufacturers and carriers, BusinessWeek reports that the "surging demand for cell-phones and services is fueling robust growth for top players -- and transforming the tech landscape for good."

According to Albert Lin at American Technology Research, about 750 million handsets will sell this year, a rise of 16 percent, and is expected to grow another 13 percent to 850 million next year, which is "about three times the size and growth of the global PC business."

Lin said, "Wireless devices are becoming a primary means of accessing data," and thought "the profusion of new features, such as mobile TV, could result in gains in the same volume or even greater."
