Mobile Phones Next Frontier for Porn Purveyors

Globe & Mail authors another one of those articles that claim mobile porn will be the next great frontier for the huge sex industry. The article cites Juniper Research that claimed the cellphone sex market globally was worth about $500-million (U.S.) in 2004, and predicted it would rise to about $2-billion by 2009.

Dr. Windsor Holden at Juniper said, "Within the past couple of years, the MMS market (multimedia service -- images and video over mobile phones) has expanded beyond all recognition. Many provide 'browse and buy' galleries or send daily recurring images, or, like voooyeur.com, ape wired services to allow amateur exhibitionists to upload their homemade content."

Julie Ask at JupiterResearch added that there was little market data on downloadable adult content, but it the market "appeals to young males, with 18 per cent of male respondents aged 18 to 34 saying they'd be interested in viewing adult videos on their mobile."

Size will matter. Screensize that is. Today's cell phone screens are better suited for static images so I can only imagine how unpleasurable an experience it would be to view adult video on a handset...
