What Gadget(s) Should I Get for $600?
Back in February, I was lucky enough to win a Treo 700w in a contest at Engadget Mobile. Due to the inflexibility of the network operators, the folks at Engadget Mobile weren't able to purchase 30 different handsets without a plan, and so instead I was sent a Amazon gift certificate in the amount of what a Treo 700w would cost without the carrier subsidy.
In my case, I now have a $600 credit at Amazon burning a hole in my virtual wallet. So what gadgets should I get?
Since I've been testing the Samsung A920 3G multimedia handset from Sprint, I've come to the conclusion that my next smartphone must have 3G and Wi-Fi. As I don't plan to switch from Cingular at the moment, I'm just going to have to wait until they roll out more UTMS handsets. I'm also starting to like the clamshell form factor so maybe I'll just hold out for the HTC Star Trek if it ever makes it to these shores.
So since I don't want to get a handset, and we have an iPod Shuffle, Sony PSP and Nintendo DS in the household, I need to figure out what other gadgets to get with my $600 Amazon credit.
One of the major gadget geek conundrums is making a purchase and then a newer device hits the market with more features and functionality. In my case, I've been thinking of getting an iPod nano, but should I wait until they increase the storage and possibly add video capabilities? Or should I just get one of the 30GB iPods even if I won't need all the storage?
My son is pushing me to purchase a XBOX 360 so he can play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This is tempting too, but supplies are currently limited at Amazon and with all the games and accessories, I'll probably go way over the $600 credit. Plus again, there are rumors that prices will drop and new stuff will be added such as higher capacity hard drives and HD-DVD drives.
Of course, I could always go the more boring route and buy stuff that might actually be useful and practical, such as a bunch of books, CDs, DVDs and household appliances. My wife wants a larger capacity pressure cooker and I would love to get a nice espresso burr grinder ($200+!) so I can grind beans at home for an even better shot of espresso. Not very exciting but definitely will be used.
So how should I spend the $600? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....
