RIM Heads Back To Court
Forbes.com reports that Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) might be heading back to court to face "another round of patent disputes, this time brought by push e-mail player Visto."
According to the article, "Visto, which provides e-mail services to mobile carriers like Sprint Nextel (nyse: S - news - people ) and Cingular, claims RIM has infringed on four of its wireless patents." The article notes that "Visto has established at least a short track record of winning intellectual property disputes. It says it won a similar dispute with e-mail software company Seven Networks last week and received a $3.6 million judgment from a court in Texas' Eastern District--the same jurisdiction where it has filed its suit against RIM."
Kitty Weldon at Current Analysis said, "The mobile e-mail market is still so tiny compared to its potential. For RIM's sake, I hope they don't let this happen again, because they have to move on. I tend to root for them, because they're the ones that made this market work."
Very true, but it should be pointed out that her firm tends to work with the vendor community and not with the enterprises relying on RIM's Blackberry and services. And while enterprises will be rooting for RIM as well, they also remember all the crap the company put them through during the NTP fiasco....
