Nearly 70% of All Ringtones are Purchased by Women

I missed this earlier, but thanks to Techdirt I found this article in cellular-news that covers a Telephia report about women outpacing men in purchasing ringtones by two to one during Q3 2005. The report found that "sixty-nine percent of mobile ringtones were bought by women, while purchases by men comprised 31% of the total revenue share." Overall, more than 9% of the wireless population purchased a ringtone during the last quarter.

Brian Monighetti at Telephia said, "Ringtones provide mobile users with personalization and individualization. Cell phones have become everyday accessories, and consumers are looking for creative ways to make a personal statement with their devices. The strong demand for ringtones shows the kind of distinctive individuality music generates."
