BlackBerry's Dominance Threatened

The Washington Post writes about the challenges Research in Motion is facing to maintain the BlackBerry as the handheld e-mail device of choice. Patent-infringement claims on one side and new more powerful devices on the other.

John Jackson at Yankee Group said, "I think RIM is facing the most critical time in its corporate history for those two reasons. Are they vulnerable? Yes."

Roger Entner at Ovum pointed out that RIM's rivals are finally figuring out what worksand thought their real threat was Microsoft and its established dominance in the workplace. He said, "I think RIM has a similar future as a lot of other once-dominant companies that Microsoft eyed. You might survive, but you're diminished."
