PCs Become Servers for Cell Phones

News-Leader.com picks up an article from the Associated Press that reports cell phones are moving beyond just voice calls and messaging. Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group said, "The phone is rapidly becoming a window to the world. In many ways it's becoming a replacement for the PC."

The article discusses the trend to bring more functionality to the handset via software. As Kevin Burden at IDC noted, "smartphone makers are encouraging software companies to keep developing new applications that can drive sales." He said, "The makers are lawyers looking for a nice hook because the phones come at such a premium price tag. To sell these things, they have to offer more than a phone and e-mail."
